Water Kefir: A Fun and Simple Way to Make a Probiotic-Rich Drink

As I’ve worked to restore my gut health over the past few years, adding Probiotics has been an essential part of my recovery. Probiotics are one of my favorite topics. I’m a lot of fun otherwise, I assure you. While I mostly focus on using Probiotic supplements, including doTERRA’s double encapsulated PB Restore & my kids and I both love the PB Assist Jr. sachets, I also enjoy probiotic drinks, such as Kombucha and Water Kefir, to mix it up a bit.

Water Kefir is simple to make and I encourage you to brew your own. It is super simple!

Following the directions, I’ve listed a few places to purchase water kefir grains if you can’t find them locally.

This recipe is for 1 quart of Water Kefir. I recommend doubling this recipe into two jars, as you’ll find you have an abundance of water kefir grains – they proliferate!

Items Needed:

  • Filtered Water (at room temperature)

  • 1 Quart Sized glass jar, such as a Mason Jar with a tight-fitting lid

  • Cheesecloth (or non-metal strainer)

  • 1/3 cup Natural Cane Sugar (do not use honey or agave)

  • ½ cup Water Kefir Grains*

Directions:

  1. Place 1/3 cup of sugar into the glass jar and dissolve the sugar with warm water. This will take up to 10 minutes or so.

add sugar and dissolve with warm water

  2. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the water kefir grains to the dissolved sugar water. Stir gently using a non-metal utensil, such as wood or safe plastic.

add water kefir to the dissolved sugar mixture

  3. Add room temperature filtered water to the jar, leaving about an inch at the top.

add water to the sugar mixture and water kefir grains
  4. Cover the jar with a tight-fitting lid.

  5. Place the jar on the counter and allow it to ferment for 1-3 days — try 2 days for starters.

    • A warmer room will cause the water kefir to ferment faster.

    • You will notice some bubbles or fizziness and it will smell slightly sour when opened.

  6. Once the water kefir is fizzy, strain out the grains using cheesecloth or non-metal strainer

stained water kefir grains (no gluten in these "grains")

  7. Start another batch with your leftover water kefir grains!

You can store the Water Kefir in the refrigerator for up to one month. The cold temperature stops the fermentation process.

Enjoy your water kefir plain, mixed with a little water to dilute the flavor, or add a little maple syrup, honey or fruit juice for sweetening.

Experiment with calorie-free certified pure tested grade essential oils, such as Lemon, Wild Orange, and Ginger!

Let me know how yours turns out! Your gut microbiome will be so happy and hopefully your taste buds, too!
